Bobby Johnson is a former American football player and coach. He was born on February 8, 1951, in Columbia, South Carolina. Johnson played college football at Clemson University, where he was a defensive back from 1969 to 1971. After his playing career, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Clemson from 1976 to 1978. He went on to coach at several different colleges, including Furman University, Vanderbilt University, and Western Carolina University.
Johnson had his most notable coaching success at Vanderbilt University, where he served as the head coach from 2002 to 2010. During his tenure at Vanderbilt, Johnson led the team to two bowl games and became the school's all-time winningest football coach. He was also named SEC coach of the year in 2008.
After leaving Vanderbilt, Johnson worked as a consultant for the NFL's Buffalo Bills and as an analyst for ESPN. In 2016, he was hired as the head coach of the Furman University football team, where he still currently serves.
Overall, Johnson is known for his strong coaching record and his commitment to developing players both on and off the field.
